Every September 23, we celebrate International Bisexuality Day, a date created to raise awareness of bisexuality, challenge prejudice and remind us of something as simple as it is important: everyone has the right to be who they are, to feel what they feel and to love whoever they love.
Bisexuality is part of sexual and romantic diversity. And although it may seem like a recent concept, it is not. Bisexuality has existed across different cultures and throughout history, even though many of these realities have long been made invisible or interpreted from perspectives that failed to give people space to define their own identity.
September 23 is also an opportunity to talk about visibility. Because there are still stereotypes and prejudices surrounding bisexuality: that it is a phase, that it means being indecisive, that you have to “choose”, or that someone stops being bisexual depending on who their partner is. None of these things defines an identity. Bisexuality does not need to be proven, justified or explained in order to be valid.
And perhaps that is the most important thing about this day: remembering that being yourself should never require permission.
No one should have to hide a part of who they are in order to feel accepted. Loving, feeling, expressing yourself or building a life differently from someone else does not make anyone less valid. Quite the opposite: the diversity of people is precisely what makes the world a richer, more human and more authentic place.
At MarSenses, we believe in creating spaces where everyone can feel comfortable being exactly who they are. Without having to hide. Without having to explain themselves. Without fear of being judged.
Because everyone has their place. Everyone deserves respect. Everyone deserves support. And, above all, everyone deserves to receive love, kindness and acceptance.
This September 23, we celebrate bisexuality, yes. But we also celebrate something that should be with us every day: the freedom to be, to feel and to love.
Because there is no single way to be a person. Or to love. Or to feel.
And at MarSenses, we want there to be space for everyone. Exactly as they are.
