Blue Monday… or just another regular Monday?

Blue Monday has been a date that has affected many people since 2005. In recent years, it has become known as the saddest day of the year. It falls on the third Monday of January (it’s never the same date, so it wouldn’t qualify as a World or International Day) and, according to experts, it marks the day of greatest sadness and discouragement of the entire year.

Now then… put like that, perhaps it would be better to call it Black Monday or something similar, because the name certainly has its implications. According to “experts,” the color blue was chosen due to references related to the time of year (shorter days, not-so-pleasant temperatures, etc.) and because it comes at the end of January—after the Christmas holidays and close to the end of the month. All these nuances supposedly make people feel more irritated, in a worse mood, and see everything more negatively than “normal.”

From the point of view of this pseudo-writer, there could be several theories here, but one stands out above the rest. It would be “Blue” in some parts of the world, because in others, grey days, snowfall, rain, and grey (or even black) skies would make the color change… wouldn’t it?

In other words, when we think of a blue sky, we usually think of idyllic places, good weather, and pleasant temperatures. As we were saying, in general terms, we tend to associate this color (well, many of us do) with favorable conditions and positive connotations.

But then this day arrives (just one out of the 365 days of the year!) and suddenly makes us think of that color as something negative, something that brings nothing good—going so far as to see it as the “worst” day (and color, by extension) of the year, when everything bad that can happen, will happen.

For this reason, at MarSenses we would like to make a call for calm. To look at things through a warmer, calmer, more positive prism—full of energy—and, why not, to encourage you to enjoy some well-deserved days off. Quality time for you and your loved ones.
